Ultrasound Changed My Life

We all face tough moments in life, and being a doctor is no different. When I finished medical school, I thought diagnosing patients would be just like the textbooks said — straightforward and clear. But reality quickly showed me otherwise. There were times I felt completely lost, unsure of the problem or what to do. Those moments left me with a heavy heart and drained the joy I thought I’d find in medicine.

That’s when ultrasound became my game-changer.

In 2017, in a high-pressure moment in the ICU, I used ultrasound to save a patient’s life. She had a cardiac tamponade — a condition I’d never diagnosed before. It was a defining moment for me. I saw how ultrasound could turn uncertainty into answers and doubt into action.

For me, ultrasound is more than a tool — it’s a way to make a real difference. And I believe it can do the same for you.

Why am I doing this?

When I saved a patient with ultrasound, my mom said,

“It’s great that you saved her, but everyone should know how to use ultrasound. Share your knowledge so others can provide the best care.”

Those words drive me every day. Inspired by my parents’ sacrifices, I founded NorVue to make ultrasound accessible for all. My goal is to help healthcare professionals learn point-of-care ultrasound, improving care everywhere.

I do this for my parents, who gave everything for me. I want to give back and be ready to help them, just as they helped me. Let’s work together to make a difference.

Eirik Tjønnfjord

Senior Consultant in thrombosis and hemostasis outpatient clinic
Hospital Ă–stfold Kalnes & OUS Rikshospitalet

Eirik (born 1979) completed his medical education in Denmark in 2009 and currently works as a senior consultant at the thrombosis outpatient clinic at Hospital Ă–stfold Kalnes and Rikshospitalet. His primary interest lies in benign hematology with a particular focus on thrombosis, coagulation, and rare conditions such as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). During his education, he encountered ultrasound DVT and echocardiography, which sparked his interest in these fields, especially now in connection with the thrombosis clinic.

Due to the high number of patients with serious illnesses and tough treatments in benign and malignant hematology, Eirik has also come across patients with erectile dysfunction, and this has become a special area of interest for him over the last year with a focus on shockwave-treatment and therapy. Additionally, Eirik is partner of NorVue and is one of the instructors you will meet in the online courses.
